About Dorothy Werner
Dorothy Werner, who died in 1996, left Mead Library a bequest of $100,000 from her estate. The former Dorothy Bowler, she was born in Sheboygan in 1900, the only child of Tim and Mary Ellen Bowler. Her father was an attorney and businessman who purchased stock in The Sheboygan Press. When he died in 1923, his daughter Dorothy was named to the newspaper’s Board of Directors, a spot she held until the newspaper company was sold in 1986.
Mrs. Werner graduated from Holy Name School, Sheboygan High School, and, in 1922, St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1924, she married A. Matt Werner, an attorney, and with him had five children: David, Mary, Tim, Pat, and John. In 1951, A. Matt Werner became editor and publisher of The Press. He retired from that position in 1964, but continued on as chairman of the board. He died in 1977.
While raising her children, Mrs. Werner was very active in Catholic lay organizations, community health and educational scholarship programs, including the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, the National Council of Catholic Women, the American Association of University Women, Mental Health Association, American Cancer Society, and Easter Seals. She also stayed involved in the newspaper, maintaining historical files and planning social activities for The Press employees.
The association of Mrs. Werner and her family with The Sheboygan Press prompted the Library Board to apply her generous bequest to the acquisition and distribution of current, accurate information designed to meet the needs of Sheboygan residents using state of the art information technology.
