Borrowing a Kindle

kindle

Mead Library is offering its adult card-holders a chance to get to know the Kindle, a wireless reading device from Amazon.

Five Kindles have been purchased with funds from the William R. Werk Estate, designated for materials that assist the visually impaired. Kindles give users the ability to display type in various sizes and 16 shades of gray and many books offer a text-to-speech feature that “reads” a book out loud.

However, any adult with a Mead Library card in good standing (not blocked due to unpaid fees or lost materials) can borrow a Kindle through the second floor Adult Services department. Because it’s considered a technology trial project, Kindles are not available through EasiCat or for those who have cards from other libraries.

The Kindles must be reserved through the Adult Services department (second floor, 459-3400, ext. 3422) or by e-mail (please include your phone number and library card number in your e-mail message).

You will be contacted by telephone or e-mail when a Kindle is available for you. You then have three days to pick up the Kindle. If the Kindle is not picked up within 3 days, the next person on the reserve list will be contacted. When picking up the Kindle at the 2nd floor reference desk, you will need your library card and some form of photo I.D., such as a drivers license.

Each Kindle will have the same 120 titles, a variety which includes many different types of books. A list of titles can be found below. Titles will continue to be added in the future. The checkout period is 14 days (with no renewals).

Borrowers must sign an agreement acknowledging financial responsibility for lost or damaged equipment and the late fee of $5 per hour the library is open.
